Bypolls in Tamulpur and Gossaigaon assembly seats were necessitated following the death of the sitting MLAs, while the incumbent MLAs of Thowra, Mariani and Bhabanipur had resigned to join the ruling BJP. Thowra Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain quit the party on July 30, and joined the BJP on August 1.
Though the name of the BJP candidates for the bypolls have not been officially announced till the time of filing this report, party leaders said it was almost certain that the newly-joined Borgohain will be fielded from the Thowra assembly seat.
On Sunday, the two-time MLA inaugurated a BJP party office at Demow under the Thowra assembly constituency in Sivasagar district. It will serve as the head office for the Thowra assembly by-election. Hundreds of party workers and functionaries, including Demow BJP town unit president Plabita Gogoi Baruah, Thowra unit president Amiyo Gogoi and Nitai Pani Dihing unit president Nabin Gogoi were present during the inauguration programme.
On Saturday, Borgohain along with several BJP leaders, including former Thowra BJP MLA Kushal Dowari and BJP spokesperson Subhash Dutta, had addressed a booth-level meeting at Nemuguri Konwar village, which was attended by hundreds of party workers and local public. Borgohain also had a meeting with 145 booth presidents under Thowra constituency.
Similarly on October 1, the BJP organised a public meeting at Demow as part of its public outreach programme in view of the bypolls where state finance minister Ajanta Neog, Jorhat MP Topon Kumar Gogoi and others were present.
