The number of coronavirus infected in India crossed the 200 mark today after a spike in cases over the past six days. In view of this rising threat, more and more state governments have brought in stringent measures to check the spread of the disease, with many of them imposing curfew-like situation in places that have been hit hard.

Here is a full account of all that happened today — cases, deaths and new measures introduced in different parts of the country. One of the significant steps taken today was the extension to April 15 of all visas of foreign nationals stuck in India.


— A total of 223 individuals have been confirmed positive

Maharashtra: 52 positive; 5 people now test negative & will be discharged

— Uttar Pradesh: 4 new cases, including popular Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor

— West Bengal: New Kolkata case takes total to 2

— Gujarat: 2 from Ahmedabad, 1 from Vadodara tested positive today

— Andhra Pradesh: New patient in Visakhapatnam, 3rd in the state

— Dehradun: 3 cases reported in Forest Research Institute

— Punjab: Mohali woman takes total to 3



— Near shut-down in Mumbai from midnight

— All non essential services including private offices to be shut; 25% attendance in govt offices in Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and Nagpur till March 31

— Grocery shops, Milk shops, Banks will be functioning and will be exempt

— Local trains and buses to run as usual

— Exams from 1st to 8th standard of the state board stand cancelled

— Exams for class 9th & 11th will be conducted after 15th April


— Malls to remain wholly shut except the ones with grocery stores and pharmacies in them

— Non-essential public dealing activities was stopped till March 31, adding that only essential public dealing activities will continue

— Non-essential staff to work from home; all permanent and contractual employees will be paid for this period

— State govt issues advisory for private sector employers to allow employees to work from home till March 31

— All international flight operations to be temporarily suspended at Delhi Airport

— Delhi Metro to be closed on March 22, the day of Modi’s Janta Curfew

— Connaught Place to remain closed from 7am to 9pm on 22nd March

— JNU asks students to vacate hostels


— No meetings other than those related to COVID-19 or regarding maintenance of basic services to take place in Govt offices

— CM seeks postponement of Census work

— Entry of tourists and devotees to Puri’s Jagannath Temple restricted from tomorrow till 1st April 2020

West Bengal:

— Rice distributed via PDS for Rs 2 per kg will be free for the next 6 months


— All university, board exams postponed


— Entry of domestic and foreign tourists banned

— Forest Research Institute in Dehradun put under complete lockdown


-HC postpones SSC exams for Class 10


— Meghalaya to close all shops, market, and establishments

— All passengers travelling to Assam to be stamped by the state Govt

— No examination will be held in Assam till March 31

Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh

— Ladakh Administration orders that no commercial flights landing at Leh shall carry in-bound passengers other than residents of Ladakh, civilian officers and officers of uniformed forces serving there

— All school teachers to stay at home in Jammu and Kashmir

Uttar Pradesh

— Lucknow shuts bars, cafes, lounges, salons and beauty parlours till March 31

Tamil Nadu

— Tamil Nadu-Kerala border in Coimbatore will be closed from today evening


— All important temples in Gujarat including Ambaji, Dwarka, Dakor closed for devotees

— Ahmedabad may come under section 144 soon

Himachal Pradesh

— Firozpur rail division cancels trains in Kangra
