GUWAHATI: Covid deaths in Assam dropped to 56 on Sunday — the lowest in a week — even as the daily positivity rate remained unchanged and was hovering around 9%. Highest 13 deaths were reported from Kamrup (Metropolitan) district under which the Guwahati city falls.
Total 503 deaths have been reported in the state since May 10, and the daily deaths have been fluctuating. Highest 85 deaths — maximum Covid deaths in a day since last year — was reported on May 11.
On Sunday, 3,650 new cases were detected across the state after 42,884 tests were done. The daily cases declined on Sunday, if compared to the previous day, when 5,347 Covid cases were detected. But the positivity rate has marginally gone up from 8.26% recorded on Saturday, to 8.51% on Sunday. The latest recovery rate in the state has been 85.73%.
Significantly, the number of active cases has declined from Saturday’s 44,008 to 43,377 on Sunday after 4,225 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. Kamrup (Metropolitan) district registered the highest 1,197 new cases on Sunday. Other high caseload districts were Cachar (262), Dibrugarh (240) and Kamrup (211).
Even as the Kamrup (Metropolitan) administration has withdrawn its containment order declared earlier in Guwahati municipal wards 8, 16 and 28 from 5 am on Monday, after witnessing marginal decline in new cases in the last couple of days, the cases have again shown an inclining trend on Sunday.
“As a whole, the Covid situation remains the same in Assam. Unexpectedly, cases have gone up in Kamrup (Metropolitan), though the overall cases have declined in the state. But the number of tests was also on the lower side today,” executive director at Assam NHM, Dr Manoj Choudhury told TOI.
Even as the death cases have come down, he said, it will need a few more days to analyze the Covid death pattern in the state.
Choudhury informed that the new cases in Guwahati are being tested in the areas which have been under containment. “Fresh Covid cases are being detected in the containment zones and central Guwahati. Ward numbers- 26 and 28 especially remain vulnerable,” he added.
